Breakfast Hot Chocolate

The gently falling snowflakes… the soft melody of “White Christmas” playing in the background… and that first taste of piping hot chocolate hitting your lips… the sights and sounds, smells and tastes of Christmas are in full force. And I can’t get enough of it… especially the hot chocolate.

The beauty of this recipe is that you can actually substitute it for a meal… even for breakfast. But… why? asks the healthy mama (as healthy mamas should).  Because it’s packed with low-glycemic, plant-based protein along with probiotics for digestive health and Omega 3 fatty acids for heart and brain health. If you have last-minute gifts to wrap or last-minute cards to write, this breakfast will keep your momentum going strong. And it can also be useful when the kids insist on opening gifts at 6 a.m.

Breakfast Hot Chocolate

Ingredients (makes 1 serving):

• 1 cup of almond, coconut or regular milk
• 2 dates
• 1 tbsp. of cacao powder
• 2 scoops of Shaklee LIFE protein powder * (use the chocolate-flavored protein if you want this to be extra chocolatey… otherwise the vanilla will work just fine and is my personal preference when mixed with the cacao powder)
• 1 tbsp. of almond butter
• Coconut flakes for garnish

Directions:

Blend the milk, dates and almond butter. Add in the cacao and protein powder and blend until smooth.

Transfer to a small saucepan and heat on low until it reaches your ideal sipping temperature.

Top with coconut flakes and a sprinkle of cacao powder.
